Interactive Activity 09/30/2009

Baby Einstein
Many of us at Baby Einstein are parents and we have to be honest—hanging out with our kids is just plain fun. Maybe it’s the completely fresh perspective with which they look at the world or perhaps it’s that they are just so darn cute—either way, we’re always looking for new ways to keep playtime varied and engaging. From craft time to stories to dancing to singing to listening to music, there are definitely a lot of activities to draw from. Here are some suggestions:

1. Explore the colors and textures of your own home—group together a group of similarly colored items (soft blue towels, smooth green apples, etc.) and have baby explore a new hue every day.

2. Have baby turn the pages of the book as you read to them. You can even try doing different voices for the characters!

3. Take baby to the petting zoo and imitate the noises of the animals you’re looking at.

What is your favorite activity for playtime?

New Baby Einstein DVD! 09/25/2009

Baby Einstein Puppet

We’re always thinking of interesting ways to bring the amazing diversity and beauty of the world to young kids. Baby Einstein has always been inspired by colors (just look at our logo!) and over the past year, we’ve spent a lot of time exploring this theme. Namely how babies come to identify all the different hues they see. It occurred to us that there are so many vibrant, bold colors represented across the globe, why not introduce those shades as represented by different cultures? That’s how we came up with the concept behind World of Colors, our newest DVD coming in 2010!

We just completed filming World of Colors and will keep you up-to-date with some fun behind-the-scenes images and stories of our adventures!

A Moment with Charlene 09/22/2009

Baby Einstein's Charlene Denice Pugh

Production Associate, Charlene Denice Pugh, is involved at every step with the creation of Baby Einstein DVDs and her passion for her work shows through even at her desk, which is covered (and we mean, covered) with puppets and artwork. This will be the first post of several in which Charlene weighs in on her thoughts about Baby Einstein.

What is your favorite part of the job?

“My favorite part of the job is the creative process of brainstorming. I love getting a diverse group of people in a room and turning them loose to come up with pie-in-the-sky ideas for upcoming projects. And trust me, some of the ideas are really out there. But, I love that. The fun and challenging part comes after the storm when the brain has to process all of the ideas into creating the next title. It’s during those times that I really need patience from my cat.”

What is your favorite DVD title and why?

“My favorite DVD is Baby Monet because it is just a beautiful title and showcases my favorite artist, Claude Monet. Watching the DVD reminds me of the first time I saw the brilliance of his masterpiece Water Lilies up close and personal at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Also, it’s fun watching the zebra puppet change his stripes to match the four seasons.”

Baby Einstein Puppets

You already know that Baby Einstein puppets are the adorable critters that guide babies through our DVDs. But did you know that the shape and style of these puppets were intentionally created to keep in mind the delicate nature of children’s skin and their tactile development?

In the early days of Baby Einstein, founder Julie Aigner-Clark used towel puppets in her first videos, drawing on her experience as a mom trying to entertain her kids in the bath.

As a result, all current Baby Einstein puppets are similarly cuddly and designed to pique your children’s curiosity about the world around them.

Every week, we will feature one of our most popular puppets and tell you a bit about them!

Mommy Brain 09/16/2009

Dr. Karen Hill Scott on Baby Einstein

“I was in Portland recently for a family event and promised I’d join my daughter and her friends for a half-marathon in a town named improbably, Helvetica.  Who would name their town after a font, or was it the other way around?  The girls in the running club (including my daughter) looked at me quizzically when I brought this up because, of course, the town is not Helvetica, but Helvetia, an old Roman word for Switzerland, which is the national origin of the first immigrant settlers to this verdant farming community just northwest of Portland.

This sidetrack into the town name relates to my main point about brain function.  Sometimes we try to make what we see or hear conform to our expectation.  I’m on a computer most of the day, so I read the town name as Helvetica.  But sometimes we have to do just the opposite– make adjustments in our thinking based on reality.

As our group drove to Helvetia, my new friends talked about the running club, reviewed who was doing what with each mom’s kids while we spent half the day at the race, and took inventory of our supplies to see if we were missing anything. That’s when one of the moms, who has a baby and a 3-year-old, brought up the subject of memory and motherhood.

“What is it about having babies that makes your brain go kaput?  I swear I’m always looking for something I forgot or I’ve forgotten something that I knew I needed.” As I listened to the group echoing their frustration about memory overload and memory loss, my thoughts ran right back to the days of having to keep up with 4 sets of kiddie gear, food, and clothing just so I could run errands for a couple of hours.  It was really an undue burden or an otherwise alert mind.

But I also immediately realized that while the moms were preoccupied with memory loss, there’s something to be said about the brain gain moms get shortly after the first baby is born.  It’s call RADAR  (a Relational Aptitude for Detecting Activity and Reactivity). Now, RADAR idea isn’t a proven scientific fact.  It’s just a personal observation.  But it does seem to make sense; at least for most moms.

Mommy RADAR is a very special feature of the Mommy Brain.  When a baby cries you know if it’s a hungry cry, or a “come and get me” cry.  If the sound changes in a room, you know to check on baby because either she’s up to something or has fallen sound asleep.  Your RADAR brain function is just as important as that ability to remember burp cloths in the same moment that you are looking for your keys.  So if you have to give up a little bit of memory in order to keep your kids under continuous surveillance, it’s not such a bad swap.

So, when you’re beating yourself up because you think you’ve become a total mess just stop and adjust your thinking based on your reality.  Reflect on this mantra. “I am competent, I can manage, my brain works.” After all, you do have RADAR.”

Baby Einstein Cards

Anyone who has had kids knows the amazing moment when they say their first word. It’s always an emotional experience—a mixture of sadness that they’re already growing up, amazement that they’re starting to comment on the world around them, and total relief that they will finally be able to tell us when they are too hot, need a nap, or are just plain hungry!

We’re curious—what was your first word? What was baby’s?

Dr. Karen Hill Scott on Baby Einstein

Let’s face it—parenthood is a complex role that often combines exhilaration and exhaustion in the same breath. Charting a course through the ups and downs can definitely be a challenge, especially if you are new to it all!

That’s where Dr. Karen Hill Scott comes in. She’s a child development consultant to The Baby Einstein Company. As a mother of four, a grandmother of eight (with one more on the way!), she combines the best of her “book smarts” with deep, practical experience, and provides down-to-earth commentary on babies, child-rearing, and parental life too. When she’s not advising us on parent-baby together time, she teaches at UCLA and serves on the board of the Foundation for Child Development.

We are happy to announce that she will be adding her wise voice to this site regularly. Down the road, be on the lookout for Dr. Scott’s great tips, anecdotes, and insights!
