Parent Tip: A Loving Keepsake for Baby 02/16/2010

For a wonderful keepsake that your child will love to look through again and again, take snapshots of your baby each day she turns a month older.  Create a personalized birthday sign on the computer that she can pose with each month (for example, “I’m four months old today!”).  Include the date and your child’s height and weight on the sign.  Cover the monthly pictures of a calendar with the pictures of your baby.  Keep a record of Baby’s firsts by filling them in on the calendar as they take place: her first tooth, first crawl, first words, first trip to the zoo.  She’ll love this, especially when she’s a little older to appreciate it.

Valentine’s Day 02/12/2010

I thought I knew what love was, and then I had a baby.

In elementary school, it was brown lunch bags decorated with pink construction paper. We slipped hand scrawled single face cards, accompanied by hard, chalky candy hearts, into classmates’ sacks and giggled. In later years, when the cards weren’t mandatory, they became the trophies of that week’s most popular girls and boys. They always meant the same thing. To our young minds, they meant love.

Love came and went, was at first sight or learned, and was often accompanied by tears. It was a feeling, both physical and emotional, sometimes consecutively and sometimes not. The fact that I still remember the name of the boy who first kissed me and where we were and what the weather was like is not unusual. I was certain on that day that I knew what love was.

Love is a lot of things. But until I had a baby, I didn’t know how many things it was.

You know the feeling, right? As a mom, reading this? You’ve just been through a physical pain like you’ve never known and pushed an alien being from your body, and you love that baby so immediately and completely that you would do anything for it. Love. Love like you’ve never known.

Valentine’s Day is the day that we celebrate love. On Wikipedia, it’s defined in this way: Saint Valentine’s Day (commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day) is an annual holiday  held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.

Before I had a baby, I thought that Valentine’s Day was about romantic love, but I consider the definition. For who have I been more intimate with than my children? They came into the world yelling at me, red and slippery, and then quieted at my breast. I loved them when I cleaned the messy folds of their skin, and I loved them when they drooled onto my shoulder and when their diapers leaked onto my lap. When they cut new teeth and when they smiled for the first time. And they loved me, even when I came to their crib at 5am, without make-up and hair a mess, and they thought I was beautiful. I sang to them without reserve, toneless and tuneless, and they loved me then, too. We have cried together when a pet died, been sick together, and we laugh at the same bad jokes. We have shared every birthday.

I have helped my children decorate their own brown paper bags for school valentines, and I know whose cards they treasure. To them, Valentine’s Day is about romantic love. Someday, when they have children, they will learn.

I thought I knew what love was, and then I had a baby.

And then I knew what love was.

Top tips for dad on bonding with baby 02/10/2010

A little quality time with dad can go a long way towards bonding with baby and creating some great memories.

  1. Read to baby – Whether it’s your baby’s favorite children’s book or even the sports page, your baby will love to hear the sound of your voice.
  2. Take baby outside – Check out nature’s sights, sounds and textures.
  3. Capture the moment – Keep the digital camera handy and don’t be afraid to use it frequently.  Baby will appreciate the photos as she gets older.
  4. Give baby a massage – A licensed massage therapist can help with tips on the best approach.
  5. Bathe with baby – The experience can be calming and soothing for both of you.
  6. Change baby’s diaper – While not always the most pleasant for dad, helping with the diaper will give you more time with baby (and give mom a much needed break)
  7. Be silly – Have staring contests, make noises and funny faces.  You’ll both share a laugh.
  8. Dance together – Introduce different genres of music and have some fun with it.
  9. Start a growth chart – Begin it on baby’s first birthday and make it an annual father-child birthday tradition.
  10. Make it a regular occurrence – Schedule time together on a frequent basis and begin creating some memories

Today is the birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Many people know that Mozart was an accomplished composer, but did you know that…

Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria.

Mozart was baptized Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. His family called him Wolferl.

Mozart could write music notes before he could write words.

By age 8, he wrote his first symphony (Symphony No. 1)

In total, Mozart wrote over 600 musical works, including 50 symphonies, 25 piano concertos, 12 violin concertos, 27 concert arias, 26 string quartets, 103 minuets, 15 masses and 21 opera works!

Music & Discovery Octopus

Inspired by the Baby Neptune DVD, this on-the-go toy plays classical melodies each time the handle is pulled.  Plus a soft fish-shaped teether, clacking rings and “crackling” tentacles help to delight and keep baby occupied while you’re at home or on-the-go.

Blah!!! 01/22/2010

Bard Blah

The scene from Baby Mozart in which Bard (the green dragon) says “Blah!” is one of most popular scenes in any of the Baby Einstein DVDs (and one that parents tell us is a favorite of babies).  The story behind the scene is that Bard, a very young dragon, tries so hard to spit fire like the other dragons, but because he’s such a young dragon he can’t yet do it.  The only thing that seems to come out is “Blah!” which, you may agree, makes him all the more adorable.

A Few Notes about Babies & Music 01/19/2010

Babies are responsive to music from the moment of birth, and listening to music can also increase a child’s awareness of the many ways sounds are produced.  Music can be calming and soothing or inspire movement and action.  Just in the same way that adults can find classical music to be calming, babies can be calmed and soothed by it as well.

Click here for tips on how to explore new sounds and add a little variety to the way you introduce music to your baby.
